Cherry Elizabeth Trumbo - Former Slave - Kansas City Times August 7, 1954 - Black History

This is another interesting piece of Missouri slave history. These are the stories that you don't read about in the history books. These stories are hidden from public view but are stories that need to be told. I will start adding as much African American history as I can to this blog to broaden the scope, coverage and ethnicity as I can. Everyone has a story to tell, and If I can help families find their long lost relatives here in Missouri and Kansas I will.

Lester Anderson, Son of Slave - Weston Missouri

Reading old Kansas City Newspapers specifically looking for Black History to share with all of you. This is a very interesting story about Lester Anderson, who's father was born a slave in Northwest Missouri.  I hope you all enjoy it, if you do, provide some feedback.  I'd love to help find his family so they have this article and the picture of him that accompanies it.

Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Neosho Missouri

I'm always curious about people's stories, who they are, where they come from, what they do for a living, married, kids, college, etc. I am always more interested in people of color and where they come from, their roots. Now, I know most people don't walk around asking African Americans where they come from, but I do, not always, but sometimes. So in celebration of Black History Month, I'm doing a search today for "Negro" "Slave" and "African american" cemeteries in the state of Missouri using the old Kansas City Star. Who knows, I might broaden the search. My first article comes from the Kansas City Star, May 28, 1970, about the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, located in Neosho Missouri.

From reading the first few lines you can see that this cemetery, like so many other Black Cemeteries are forgotten, overgrown, not endowed with care and in this case, it took a twin sister, her sister is deceased and buried in the cemetery, and concerned citizens getting together to clean up and restore this cemetery. Now mind you, this was in 1970, so I have no idea what the condition is today. The point of this post is for historical purposes and not what is there today. If you live in Neosho and you know the condition of this particular cemetery, please let me know so I can make an update at some point in the future.

Enjoy the reading folks:
